NYC Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (220g) packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, cold
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (340g) semisweet chocolate chips or chunks
  • Sea salt flakes, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Cream the butter and sugars:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cold, cubed butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Use a stand mixer with the paddle attachment or a hand mixer to cream the mixture on medium speed until it is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the eggs and vanilla:
    • Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Combine the wet and dry ingredients:
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips:
    • Gently fold in the chocolate chips or chunks using a spatula or wooden spoon.
  7. Shape the cookies:
    • Divide the dough into large balls, about 3 1/2 ounces (100g) each. You can use a kitchen scale to measure the dough. Place the dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them a few inches apart to allow for spreading.
  8. Chill the dough (optional but recommended):
    • For best results, chill the shaped dough balls in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before baking. This helps the cookies maintain their shape and develop a better texture.
  9. Bake the cookies:
    • Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown but the centers are still slightly soft. The cookies will continue to cook and set as they cool on the baking sheet.
  10. Cool and garnish:
    • Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool on the sheet for 10 minutes. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. While the cookies are still warm, sprinkle them with sea salt flakes.
  11. Serve:
    • Enjoy your NYC-style chocolate chip cookies with a glass of cold milk or your favorite beverage.

These cookies are perfect for those who love thick, chewy, and indulgent chocolate chip cookies. Enjoy!
